MY ROOM MY SPACE
It seemed like a dream come true, there I was in the midst of empty space with endless hopes and dreams waiting to be released. I was seven years old when my eyes beheld this space, this room that would be my bedroom during my youth and early adulthood. Until this day arrived, my brother and I shared a bedroom in a tiny apartment. The joy of having my own room was so exciting. There was a sense of freedom I never had before. I was jumping up and down in my new room, it was exhilarating to call it ‘my room’.
The room was filled with wood panel ceilings and brown carpet. The slanted ceilings sloped to a paneled wall about two feet high. A window faced the street with a tree planted on the sidewalk. Every morning during the summer when the sun dropped its golden rays upon the earth, I was greeted with the melody of birds chirping and swaying leaves. Near the bedroom door was an alcove where my desk played an important role growing up. This was my home, my oasis.
During my childhood we didn’t have smartphones. Phones were plugged into a wall and if you were fortunate, maybe one wireless landline phone for communication. Most interaction took place outside with family and friends, going to the mall, recreational events, church and holidays. Answering machines were a hit when missing a call … or avoiding telemarketers lol. In some ways, life was simpler back then and today many are seeking a simpler life.
Today with mobile technology, communication is quick and share our everyday life with those we know and love, but so often we need time away to breathe and be one with our Creator. I believe deep within all of us is the "Garden" we are destined for, but we'll cover that in another chapter.
Do you have that one space you remember from your childhood? The one place you felt safe and dreamed your dreams of life? You saw the vision of who you wanted to be and prayed one day it will happen? As this story continues, you'll see the person I was destined to become and who I am today. It all began with my space, my room.
